It Did Not Start With Stonewall: Black Lesbian Elders Tell Their Herstories
Our revolution didn’t start with Stonewall. African American lesbian elders tell the tales of gay New York life in Harlem, Brooklyn and the Bronx before the world-altering Stonewall rebellion. In this clip they recall, raids and suffocating laws and racial discrimination faced within the gay community.

Wow-need to hear and see so much more of this. It’s as much a part of my heritage as what I’ve been taught to view as my heritage that excludes the struggles of queer folks of color. Thank you!

Hi, we’re working on tracking down the original source of the clip and the producer. We will update as soon as we have this information. Some folks are saying it is a clip from the 1985 documentary “Before Stonewall: The Making of a Gay and Lesbian Community” but these women do not appear in the documentary. Stay tuned!
