Ashanti and Sherri Shepard Face Backlash Over Anti-Gay Comments

R&B singer Ashanti has landed in hot water after exchanging words with a Twitter user over the weekend, mocking and accusing him of being a closeted gay.

Ashanti tweeted to her followers Sunday, asking, “Who ya’ll got” (referring to the NFC Championship football game between the Seattle Seahawks and the San Francisco 49ers).

When one person responded, “Your flop single,” the “Foolish” singer responded, “don’t be mad at me cause u in the closet… Flop that ya lil b#tch lmao!”

Many of Ashanti’s Twitter followers fired back, shaming her for the anti-gay insult.

She has since deleted the tweet.

6a00d8341c730253ef01a3fc686214970b-800wiSherri Shepard, who came under fire last week for controversial remarks made during an interview with Fusion TV’s Alicia Menendez, took time on “The View” to make a public apology and clarify her comments.

Shepard told the audience:

“I’d like to say I’m truly sorry to anyone I’ve offended with the viewpoints I expressed on “Alicia Menendez Tonight” on the Fusion network. My interview was misrepresented, and only a portion of my comments were used as a headline to give the impression that I was condemning members of the LGBT community living in their own truth. In the interview, I express I was raised as a child to have a certain set of beliefs, but my beliefs have evolved significantly as my own personal relationship with Christ has increased.”

The comedian’s Fusion interview went viral last week after she said, “You grow up being a Christian and you grow up believing homosexuality is a sin; you’re going to hell if you’re a homosexual. This is something that they teach in churches. So it’s something that I grew up believing. She added, “I might not agree with your lifestyle, but I love you. You may not agree with my lifestyle, but you love me.”

Chime in and let us know what you think! Should Ashanti issue a public apology? Is Sherri crossing a thin line with her “love the sinner, hate the sin” ideology?
