Brittney Griner and Robin Roberts Featured in OUT Magazine’s “Power List”
Earlier this week, Out magazine announced its 8th Annual Power List, a roundup of the 50 most powerful lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender women and men. Basketball player Brittney Griner and TV anchor Robin Roberts come in at numbers 31 and 10, respectively. According to Out, the ranking is based on their “public profiles and ability cultural influence; their impact through traditional outlets such as politics and business, along with an ability to harness social media and new forms of communication.”
The Fab Femme reports that a total of six queer people of color are included in this year’s list. In addition to Griner and Roberts, CNN’s Don Lemon, singer Frank Ocean, football player Michael Sam and drag personality Rupaul make the ranks. One trans person (non-POC) was included on the list for the first time ever.
In an article titled “When Visibility Becomes Power,” Out highlights trans women of color makes strides in the media (actress Laverne Cox, author Janet Mock, model Carmen Carrera). Cox and Mock are also included in Out‘s “Coming Up Fast: The Next 8,” a list of notables on the rise.
The publication has gotten heat in the past for the lack of people of color and trans inclusion on its annual lists of compelling LGBT individuals and power players. We hope to see even more diversity in the future.
