MC Lyte recently sat down with MSNBC’s theGrio and chatted about everything from her longevity to the new generation of hip hop to openly gay rappers being accepted in the music industry. When asked if we would ever see the day where there’s an openly gay mainstream rapper, the hip hop legend took a page out of Brandy’s book and said, “never say never.”

“I will never say never. Kudos is such a corny word but Kudos to all of the people that you just mentioned for being able to live their lives out loud. If that’s what they needed to do in order to feel free, so be it,” she said. “With [Michael Sam], I don’t know this story but thank you. You’re actually updating me on news. That’s great for him. I’m sure his life will not be the same. But then, who expects it to be?”

Back in 2012, R&B singer and songwriter Frank Ocean came out via an open letter on his Tumblr page. The award-winning singer was also open in his earlier music, on tracks such as “Bricks and Steel”, which was released on his mixtape lonny Breaux.

Amongst others who are open about their sexuality are rappers Angel Haze (pansexual) and Azealia Banks (bisexual).
