WATCH: T-Pain’s Sloppy Interview Slamming Homophobia in Hip-Hop

In a recent interview with Vlad TV, rapper T-Pain speaks out about homophobia in hip hop saying it’s ”terrible” and “weird,” and that he doesn’t “fuck with” folks who shun gay people. T-Pain also repeatedly makes stereotypical jokes about gay men being predators, eating dainty foods like Nutella and shrimp salad, and straight men getting raped in prison. Are his comments a sign of progress or still problematic? Peep the clip and tell us what you think.

As Gawker points out, “This interview is messy and imperfect. T-Pain calls women ‘bitches.’ At one point he says, ‘I don’t fuck with nobody who cut people off because how they choose to live they life,’ and then, ‘It’s in his fuckin’ genes man, it’s not a fuckin’ choice.’”

“But it’s also a snapshot of a continually evolving conversation in hip-hop and R&B from someone who’s on the right side of history,” Gawker reporter Rich Juzwiak continues. ”Someone who is relaxed enough to be wrong, and someone who sees homophobia for the absurdity that it is.”

What do you think of the interview?

They’re not problematic. Even if he’s joking about nutella and all of that, his attitude is what a lot of people should have. I think that his employment of a gay man is a great step forward in the acceptance of the hip hop community towards gay identifying people. He’s not the most women respecting man, but I think most of his comments are commendable and mature.
