Earth Pearl Collective Presents: A Streetcar Named Desire

Making iconic productions of mainstream theater relatable to minority communities has often been a struggle for arts advocates, but several African-American remakes on classics like Oklahoma and a A Streetcar Named Desire are attracting recent critical success. On the heels of these runs, Earth Pearl Collective looks to further modernize and update a theater favorite, by focusing a gender-bending lens on their own interpretation of “A Streetcar Named Desire.”

Director Iman Crutcher has assembled an all-female, black, queer cast of nine to boldly reinvent Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer-Prize winning stage play. The reimagination will explore lesbian, bisexual, and transgender relationships in communities of color, with a special emphasis on the role domestic violence plays in queer women’s relationships. A panel discussing these issues will also be held the week before the showings.
