What You Missed This Week 3.7.14: Babymaking, Bi Health Awareness Month & More
Meet the Babymaker
It’s hard to distinguish Preston James Thompson’s first birthday party from the hundreds of other kid-themed parties that happen every week at HippoHopp. Located off of the 1-85 access road between Clairmont and North Druid Hills roads, it’s one of those full-service family entertainment centers that parents relish because everything’s included under one roof: the indoor playground and inflatable bounce house, the balloons and paper party décor, the pepperoni pizza lunch and, most importantly, the cleanup.
Like most first birthdays, the real guests of honor are the two people who survived the first year of parenthood. Tonya Allen and Alana Thompson are no different. “I feel like somebody should be throwing us a party,” Allen says as the family of three waits to be greeted inside.

Bisexual Health Awareness Month to Amplify Urgency Within the Bi Community
After the historic first White House Roundtable on Bisexual Issues last September, one of the overriding imperatives coming out of the meeting was to draw attention to the severe health disparities affecting the bisexual community. The evidence we presented had a clear message: Our community is suffering and we can no longer afford to be the invisible majority of the LGBTQ community.
To keep these issues in the forefront, the Bisexual Resource Center has designated March as Bisexual Health Awareness Month. It is the first social media event of its kind to raise widespread awareness about bisexual health disparities using Facebook and Twitter. This year’s theme — “Bi the Way, Our Health Matters Too!” — will highlight the unique ways that the bisexual community experiences physical and mental health disparities and will encourage more research and services be developed to address them. The campaign will highlight research, analysis and personal commentary from across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and beyond, and will urge more bi-specific solutions in the future.

One Issue Still Bucks The Trend for LGBT Equality
The only thing as stunning as the reversal of fortune for marriage equality from 2004-2014 is the way in which workplace fairness for LGBT Americans has languished at the federal level. True, the Senate made an impressive push to pass employment protections last year, but the House of Representatives remains a sizeable hurdle to their final passage.

BREAKING NEWS: FAMU Adopts LGBT Protections
The FAMU Board of Trustees today added sexual orientation and gender identity to the university’s non-discrimination policy. The move drew strong praise from Equality Florida as an important step toward creating a welcoming and inclusive campus.
“We salute the FAMU administration and the Board of Trustees for their commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for FAMU students, faculty, staff and visitors,” said Nadine Smith, CEO of Equality Florida, who served on the committee that advocated the changes. “These protections send a clear message that the university is a place where all are welcome to learn and excel in a safe environment, without fear of discrimination. This policy of inclusion will also serve to enhance FAMU’s ability to attract the best and the brightest academic minds.”
FAMU is the largest of the country’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities, or HBCUs.
